Exciting ‘Artist in Residence’ opportunity – Act Now

An exciting opportunity has arisen for an artist, who has a lived experience of personality disorder, to apply to become an ‘Artist in Residence’ for an Emergence supported project in Brent, London.

This is the first time an ‘Artist in Residence’ post has been offered specifically to artists who identify with personality disorder.

Outline of the project

As part of the Peel Precinct Workshop 24 project, Brent Arts Therapies Service, and South Kilburn Public Art programme are commissioning a project that will benefit members of the community who experience mental health problems.

In partnership with Emergence, they are commissioning an artist who identifies with personality disorders to create a new piece of permanent 3D artwork (3D relief panel) in collaboration with South Kilburn residents who themselves experience mental health issues.

The artist will be required to draw inspiration from local architecture and environments.

Aim of the Project

The aim of the project is to improve the lives of people who identify with personality disorder in Kilburn whilst also helping to reduce the stigma associated with mental health issues, by engaging with the local community throughout the project.

The artist chosen will be commissioned to:

• Produce a 3D art piece that will be exhibited for permanent display at the Kilburn Healthy Living Centre.
• Run six participatory community art workshops to inform the design and fabrication of the art work.
• Mentor a trainee artist who identifies with PD to support the project.

The workshops will start on 7.2.2011. The completion and delivery date of the piece of artwork is 20.3.2011

Location

Based at two sites, Workshop 24 and Willesden Hospital, all workshops will take place at Workshop 24 – an empty shop space that will function as an artist’s studio for the period of the commission.

Artist Fee

£3,500 – including all costs and VAT.

Application Process

Artists are invited to submit concept design ideas and application form by 5pm 28th January 2011. Informal presentations/interviews will be carried out on Friday 4th February 2011.

It is possible to apply as a group or duo, where only one of the artists identifies with personality disorder, or the main artist has a non-sculptural discipline and the other fabricates the piece (e.g. a poet and a metal artist).

For more information please contact admin@emergenceplus.org.uk To apply please fill in an application form on the Emergence personality disorder website.

From Monday (January 24.1.11) a fuller brief will be available to download from this site.
